Innovative treatment for varicose veins
If you hate those veins sticking out on your legs and the pain you feel, you are not alone. Women get varicose veins more often than men because of their physiology. Women who have had children have a much higher rate of varicose vein formation than men because the uterus compresses the veins during pregnancy causing the valves in the legs to weaken. And those veins remain weak even after childbearing is done. Hormonal changes in women also make them more susceptible to varicose veins. But men get them too, particularly if their job requires them to keep standing for extended periods of time.
“When those veins become enlarged and dilate abnormally – it creates the varicose veins,†explained Dr. Jason Johanning. “The ultimate problem, however, is a bad valve somewhere within the vein system.â€
In the past, varicose veins were treated by traditional plastic surgery that involved incisions, stitches and scars. Dr. Johanning finds and treats the problem using a totally new procedure that involves use of an ultrasound, a laser fiber and incisions about the size of small freckle. “Essentially what we do is put a laser fiber into the large superficial vein to scar it down. Then we remove enlarged adjacent veins through incisions so small the skin heals on its own,†explained Dr. Johanning. Using this procedure the surgeon can fix the problem with little discomfort, tiny incisions and believe it or not – no stitches.
