Natural looking plastic surgery is in
When it comes to setting the fashion standards for Latinas, Colombia is the place to watch out for. Competing in a beauty pageant (that Colombia has many) is as common as competing in your highschool, and it is often said that plastic surgery is as common as a trip to the spa. But things may be changing there, according to Steven Dudley who recently traveled to attend the Medellin Moda fashion show. In a country, where padded bras are only for the poor, breast augmentation is like Botox. But the designers and trendsetters are already prefering small chests. Carmen Belissa MartÃnez, a swimsuit designer in Colombia, is quoted as saying, “I looked for models that didn’t have surgery, or at least didn’t have noticeable surgery.”
It is too early to say if this is going to become a trend in Colombia or Latin America or the rest of the world, but some signs are visible elsewhere too in the sense that some women do not want the resuls of cosmetic surgery to be “too visible.” “I rarely have patients requesting large implants anymore, although there are still a few who express a desire for that busty, ‘done’ look,” says Dr. Michael Law, a plastic surgeon in Raleigh, NC. “I counsel those patients that it is certainly possible to achieve that look, if it is truly what they want, but that I simply won’t perform any aesthetic surgery that doesn’t look natural. A woman with very large breast implants that doesn’t match her frame looks like a cartoon character, and that is not my aesthetic ideal. And these patients never have any problem finding someone who will give them the look that they want,” he adds.
One great advantage of a conservative breast enhancement is that small implants are much more likely to feel natural. It is possible to provide an enhancement that is soft, supple and even undetectable (by touching) with a small implant, something that is never achieved with very large breast implants. “Plastic surgery is more popular than ever, but most patients today don’t want to look like they’ve had surgery, they just want to look great,” concludes Dr. Law.
