Miranda writes, “I have stretch marks on my hips, butt and arms. What do I do to get rid of them? Help me please. I don’t have money to be wasting on surgeries.” Well, this is a very common question that I receive because nothing bothers women more than unsightly stretch marks. Once these spots are in prominent areas like Miranda’s, it is nearly impossible to go to the beach or wear any outfit in summer that shows some skin. Unfortunately, most women are stuck with them for life and realize that they have them only after the damage is done.
I don’t know if you were aware of this, but stretch marks are best dealt with as soon as they show up. So right after pregnancy, a woman should deal with them, preferably in consultation with a physician because they should be part of getting her pre-pregnancy body back. If they are as a result of weight loss, the same approach should be used. I also want to emphasize that it is nearly impossible to get rid of stretch marks completely, particularly if they have been there for some time. What you can try, though, is to make them appear less visible. I am assuming that while you do not wish to have cosmetic surgery, but you do have access to a family doctor. If you can get a recommendation to see a dermatologist, you should ask for a prescription to a skin cream that has prescription strength retinol as an ingredient (these can be somewhat expensive creams and are typically not covered by insurance). That can be very helpful to treat these marks. In case you cannot get a prescription, at your drugstore, search for an over-the-counter cream containing retinol.
While many experts think of this as surgery, but I think that laser treatments are not really surgery; they are more like specialized skin treatments. If you have the budget for that, at least you can go to a consultation at a medspa and try to decide if you would be interested in having a laser treatment.
In addition to that, try to stay healthy and maintain your weight. If you are trying to lose weight, go right ahead, but when you reach your desired goal, try to stay at that level because weight fluctuations are terrible for stretch marks. Also, consume plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water.
