Cosmetic surgery may not improve self esteem for everyone

Do you recall what Sharon Osbourne said after she had all the cosmetic surgery procedures done? Her self esteem went through the roof, she revealed. Apparently, she had poor body image despite the fact that her husband Ozzie Osbourne accepted her as she was.

But can you expect the same results in self esteem improvement as her? In most cases, Yes. However, a recent study suggests that women who have breast augmentation surgery done for cosmetic reasons are three times as likely to commit suicide than the general population. The scientists believe the problem stems from issues of low self-esteem and poor body image in women who have breast implants and suggested that cosmetic surgeons should evaluate women for psychological problems before carrying out any such procedures.

In other words, if you think you are depressed or have other psychological problems, you might find that plastic surgery might be an escape for you and may even result in something called the body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Here are a few questions to ask when you want to go under the knife:

Do I have low self esteem?
Do I have a poor body image?
How do I feel about myself/my body?
How will I feel if my body would change?
Is there any other way I can change my body? (For instance, can you get a flat tummy with diet and exercise rather than a liposuction or tummy tuck?)
    What else is bothering me?
What will I do if I am still not satisfied with my body after cosmetic surgery?

And it also does not hurt to consult a psychiatrist or your therapist as you make up your mind and review the reasons for plastic surgery.
