Risks of plastic surgery contests

Participating in a plastic surgery giveaway contest may seem like a great way to get the procedure you want but remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch. In most cases, it will come with a catch. Having said that, if someone gives you cash for winning a contest, then grab and run with it.

Let me cite the story of Mileydis Dome¬≠nguez of Miami who won the Univision (a Spanish language television channel) Cambio (makeover) Total contest for a complete makeover that was to be featured on a program called Despierta America (a morning show). In the usual format for such programs, she was featured on television to show how she looked “before.” Then it was determined that she should have work on her teeth, Botox, varicose vein treatments, tummy tuck, breast augmentation, liposuction, and finally makeup/hair/dresses for the final reveal.

What many people don’t realize is that the television channels are not in the business of helping you – they run a media business and if something doesn’t make business sense for them, you are just useless for them. And so when Univision decided to cancel the show, they abandoned Ms. Dome¬≠nguez and completely forgot about her. Imagine her shock! Now she is suing the station.

So remember that these so-called raffles and contests are often traps and designed to get something out of you. As long as you understand the risks, it is OK to participate, but if you respect your personal dignity, then just save and get the procedure you want on your own terms.
