Laparoscipic gastric bypass surgery growing rapidly

Postby beautynova » Wed Dec 21, 2005 5:31 pm

A study published in the December issue of Archives of Surgery says that obesity surgery is growing rapidly due to the popularity of laparoscopic procedures. This type of surgery is less invasive, causes less pain, and allows for a quick recovery for most patients. Other bariatric surgery procedures are still quite risky.

Gastric bypass surgery is not cheap - costs about $25,000 - but is the only hope for morbidly obese people for whom their weight may be life threatening. The Medicare program now covers gastric bypass surgery. Another study also confirmed that mothers who have weight loss surgeries can have normal childbirth.

Lab band surgery better than dieting

Postby surgeryaddict » Tue May 02, 2006 4:59 pm

That is exactly what a finding published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (a very respected medical journal) says. What they found is that surgical treatment using laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (or lap band) was statistically significantly more effective than nonsurgical therapy in reducing weight, resolving the metabolic syndrome, and improving quality of life during a 24-month treatment program.

Now this does not mean that you all should stop working out and not diet, but for people that are mildly and moderately obese, a procedure like this one is a better option. And in case you did not know, this procedure may be covered for you by Medicare. There is also another group of people discussing gastric bypass surgery for dealing with obesity.
