Controversy over gender reassignment surgery

Postby beautynova » Mon Jan 30, 2006 4:22 pm

Even those who had never heard of gender reassignment surgery (commonly known as sex change operation) know what it is after TransAmerica movie in which Felicity Huffman has done a remarkable job. But if you were thinking of getting it done, don't rely on the IRS to help you take a tax break for it. In the opinion of the IRS, it is still a cosmetic surgery though all candidates for this surgery disagree.

IRS' Office of Chief Counsel told the appeals tribunal in a recent case that gender reassignment is not necessary surgery, and therefore, cannot be deducted as a medical expense for tax purposes. What do you think?
